When Charlie Parker returned to his Kansas City hometown on a hot July week in 1952, he was a star.
Using his saxophone, Parker had become the music pioneer, mentoring practically all of the emerging jazz giants, from Miles Davis, Dizzy Gillespie, Max Roach, Thelonious Monk and many others.
Charlie was set to play a one-week engagement at the El Capitan, a club that sat at the corner of 18th & Vine -- Kansas City's famous jazz district.
Tickets sold out fast as it became one week wasn't nearly enough for the hometown hero. Soon, a matinee was added, then more dates, then an entire second week.
It was a high-water moment for a man & the city that raised him.
